KPR rescues many Pugs, and the majority of them are in need of medical care. Most of the Pugs get better and go on to lead long, happy lives. Some however, do not. These are the Pugs that KPR has taken in who have a terminal illness. KPR is dedicated to making the last months, weeks, or days of their lives comfortable, and letting these Pugs know that someone loves them and cares about them. For some Pugs, this is the first time in their lives they know what the love of a family, a warm home and a full belly feels like.

KPR will take in any needy Pug, regardless of health, temperament or age. Please donate to help KPR continue to be able to help ALL pugs that come to us.

HOSPICE CARE!

Before coming to KPR, Angel (# 838) spent six years of her life kept in an outside kennel by a backyard breeder. She arrived at her foster home in much need of a bath and was practically hairless. With a lot of TLC, this 8 year old sweetie has turned into a lovely and loving lady. Angel likes to climb up next to her foster mom and cuddle as closely as she can. It’s almost like she’s trying to catch up for all the years when no one loved her. Angel loves playing in the backyard, especially chasing after squirrels.

HOSPICE CARE!

Percy (# 865) is an 11 year old gentleman that was dropped off at the shelter after his family lost their home. One minute he was part of a family, and the next minute he was in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by noises and smells that were unfamiliar and scary until a KPR angel went to the shelter and rescued him. Percy had a horrible cough, and the vets discovered that he has an enlarged heart that presses on his lungs, causing him to cough. He's on medications to control this, but he will be on medications the rest of his life. As if that wasn't enough, he also has arthritis in his back, causing weakness in his back legs. But, Percy still loves to run and play, and his favorite activity is sleeping all cuddled up with whichever person happens to be available! Like most pugs, Percy loves to eat - treats being his favorite. He gets along well with everyone in the house, dogs, cats and people. Percy adores children, although they need to be careful around him due to the weakness in his hind legs, he can't get out of the way very quickly.

HOSPICE CARE!

Twelve year old Yoda (# 647) was surrendered to KPR in the summer of 2008 after he had been used by his former owner as a breeder for nine years. Since Yoda hadn't been to the vet in nine years, he was brought current on vaccinations, neutered and had some much needed dental work completed. Yoda has a sweet face with large soulful eyes. His feet are splayed after spending so much time in a cage and he has a touch of arthritis. When Yoda arrived at his foster home, he had no idea how to interact with people or other dogs, spending the first few weeks in foster care just observing. Eventually he decided that dogs are supposed to sit on laps, bark for attention and follow other dogs around the yard. Yoda likes to eat in peace separately in another area. His foster home first fed him outside, but with the winter weather approaching, his foster mother had to find new places to serve his private meal. On Christmas Eve Yoda stopped eating. After a trip to the vet the day after Christmas, Yoda spent four days hospitalized on fluids and antibiotics. The vet indicated that Yoda had an irritated digestive system, but could not identify the source as he was too weak at the time for additional testing. Yoda will be returning to the vet in the very near future for liver tests, but in the meantime he is doing much better and is eating well. His foster mom says he is back to barking to express his desire for treats, dinner, or best of all attention.

HOSPICE CARE!

Hi, my name is Mylo (# 614) and I am about 10-12 years old. The nice people at KPR don't know a lot about my history, but that's ok because I am ready to write my next chapter with you. Since I'm an older fella, my back and hips are a bit sore, but that doesn't slow me down one bit! I like to tussle with my foster pug brothers and sisters, but spend a good part of my day snoozing. The vet tells me I have to take a pill for my thyroid, but I don't mind because that means I get a piece of hot dog and I really enjoy that.

Aliza (# 371) is approximately 14 years of age. When Aliza arrived into her foster home, it was discovered that she was heartworm positive. Aliza underwent her heartworm treatments like a champ and is now heartworm free.

Due to Aliza's age, she is visually impaired and doesn't have the best hearing, but she's still a feisty little gal that insists she gets as much lap time as possible. Aliza is not a picky eater and will sleep wherever. Her foster mom says she's super smart and will tackle anybody who contests her right to a warm lap. Aliza is not potty trained, but if you watch her closely, she will do the classic pug spin long enough to give you warning to get her outside or on a potty pad. Aliza does need artificial tears put in her eyes on occasion so her eyes don't dry out and is on medication for allergies.

Aliza's foster mom shared a funny story - she has a ceramic toad that has artificial flowers in it. Everytime her foster mom leaves the house, Aliza pulls the flowers out and makes a bed. Apparently Aliza prefers her bed of flowers as opposed to the numerous pillows and dog beds in the home.

HOSPICE CARE!

Bugsy
(# 434), 14 years old, is currently in hospice care. Bugsy is deaf and has trouble standing and cannot do steps. Aside from being old, he is still in good health. He sleeps most of the day and sometimes plays with all his foster brothers and sisters. Bugsy loves to lay in the sun outside. While he has trouble controlling his bowels, he still lets us know when it is time to go outside. He sleeps with us or on one of the many dog beds we have throughout the house. Bugsy is still going strong and we will unconditionally love him for the rest of the time he is with us.

HOSPICE CARE!

Jasmine
(# 462), also known affectionately by her foster mom as “Mini Moo” and “Mooey”, is a super sweet and super cute 16 lb. female pug that is approximately 7-8 years old. Jasmine was an owner surrender, who came to KPR after her owner decided they had too many dogs.

Her first visit to the vet’s office revealed a laundry list of medical needs/issues, including: numerous mast cells tumors, early cataracts/PK, luxating patella in her right back leg, and arthritis/compensation soreness in her left back leg. Even though Jasmine has early cataracts/PK, her foster mom reports that she can see just fine. Due to Jasmine’s rear legs, it is important that she be maintained at between 14-16 lbs in order to alleviate any further strain on her already tender legs. Jasmine will have a much-needed dental in the near future and will also begin a treatment plan for her tumors.

Jasmine is good with sharing toys, likes walking on a leash and loves to cuddle with her foster brother, but her most favorite place to be is in your lap getting loads of attention. Her foster mom summed Jasmine up best by saying “She really is just the sweetest little dog I have ever met.”

HOSPICE CARE!

Jazz (# 417) is a female pug who is about 10 years old. She is very loving!. She has a weak rear leg and cannot do stairs or jump on furniture She weighs 20 pounds.  Losing some weight will help her in using her rear leg. She is completely house broken and keeps right up with the younger pugs in the foster home.

Shortly after arriving at her foster home, Jazz had an episode where it appeared that she fainted. Jazz was immediately rushed to the local emergency clinic for an examination. Based upon the clinical signs and information provided by the foster home, the emergency clinic suspected that Jazz either had a seizure or a stroke-like episode, which could possibly be caused by a tumor. Chest x-rays revealed that Jazz also has a slightly enlarged heart. Due to Jazz's age, the vet advised against further treatment and/or testing as it is unlikely she would survive. Based upon the uncertainty regarding her health and the long-term prognosis, she has been placed in Hospice, where she will live out the rest of her days in love and comfort.
